The Concept of Minimalism and Roommates

Minimalism is a journey to find what truly makes you happy in life.  It isn't a fad about having the cleanest space with the least goods.  It isn't a switch you flip one day and spontaneously do.  You can't force yourself through getting rid of things.  You will never be able to "convert" people to minimalism.  And it certainly isn't a set number of things needed or not needed to "be a minimalist".  Everyone has their own version of what minimalism is. What minimalism is to me is finding what sparks a smile.  It's about adding meaning back into your life.  It's about remembering what really matters to you, building meaningful relationships, and not always wondering what this mad dash of society is.  It's about breaking the habit of compulsory purchasing and asking yourself "Why?"  "Why am I buying this?" "Does it mean that much to me?" This is a journey I found myself starting about a year or so ago, and...

Cantaloupe Trouble and Orange Juice

I have found there are two types of people: those who enjoy ripping the guts out pumpkins, and those who get grossed out by the very thought of touching that slime.  I fall into the later category and have further discovered that the insides of a cantaloupe resemble that of a pumpkin.  So tonight when I was preparing the fruit for easy storage in our fridge, this cantaloupe and I had a bit of a fight. The terms that were finally agreed upon was that I would make this as quick as possible - probably not something I should have tried to promise seeing as it was my first melon to have ever dealt with - and it was going to keep its slimy seed goo all to itself.  Apparently the cantaloupe didn't think I was working quick enough, so when I was emptying aforementioned goo into the trash bag... it all fell onto the floor. Now, as the subtitle to this blog informs you, there is a cat in this house. A curious cat. A curious and stubborn cat.  A curious and stubborn cat wh...

Perks of Living with a Drag Queen

Now just as a note, these are perks I've noted about my queen. They may not be able to be applied to all queens. 1. You always have someone to ask when it comes to your outfit and makeup. 2. "Girl Talk" is a thing, and they are open to it. 3. Your skills of quick wit won't get dulled down. 4. The level of bitch that you can handle will increase. 5. You might be able to borrow some clothes. 6. Thrifting is a whole new adventure. 7. Finally, someone else who understands the pains of wearing a bra! The only downside: That bitch will abscond with your perfume.

The Concept of "Work"

Living with three people makes things easier.  It allows for things to be spread out and almost always solves the issue of one person doing all of the work.  This is easily accomplished by way of a chore chart.  So what did The Queen and I sit down and do one night?  A chore chart! Now, since out of the three of us I was home the most often, I was doing most of the house work.  Not that I mind, they do fill my gas tank when I've been driving them around a lot and pitch in with groceries, so I consider this work part of "earning my keep".  They did not see it as such, and so the chore chart happened. Oddly enough, it is working out pretty well.  It does seem to come with a period of adjustment where we remember that we have something to do today.  But it is a good idea, since no one likes to be stuck doing all of the work. A word of caution to this: not everyone does the same chore in the same way.  Come to find out that all of the silv...

The Last Box

To begin something new with the last of something else may be a bit ominous, but it is not wholly unusual.  Much like moving.  That last box reminds you of the end of where you've been in life, up to this point.  But then you move, and you get to unpack that last box; offering yourself a sense of permanence and completion.  And a well deserved sigh of relief. You have now begun a new home with the last of your old home.  In an ideal world this would be how everyone saw things (at least, that's my opinion).  And as it turns out we do not live in this ideal world. So lets face it: NO ONE likes to move. Packing while balancing class work can be hard enough, but to add in work, a theatre production, and a BA thesis makes it miserable.  Now, slap on the fact that it is your graduating semester and you have 3 months to get out of your house and you are in for a hell of a time.  Enter my boyfriend. An absolute sweetheart to the end, supportive li...
